The Biggest Industrial Shift North Karnataka Has Seen in Decades

For years, people from Hubli-Dharwad have been packing their bags for Bengaluru to find work. That may change faster than most people expect.

A convergence of five major industrial and infrastructure projects in the twin cities is approaching critical milestones in 2026, and the combined job creation potential is estimated at over one lakh positions across direct employment and indirect roles in support industries, services, and logistics.

The Dharwad Industrial Node: 6,000 Acres of Opportunity

The centrepiece of this transformation is the Dharwad Industrial Node, a 6,042-acre greenfield industrial zone being developed under the Bengaluru Mumbai Industrial Corridor (BMIC) by the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC). The site is located near Durgadakeri-Kittur villages, roughly 23 kilometres from Dharwad and 42 kilometres from Hubballi on NH 4.

The node is designed to attract electronics manufacturing, heavy engineering, and plug-and-play industrial units targeted at multinational companies. In early 2026, the first wave of industrial plots was released for bidding, marking the end of the planning phase and the beginning of actual construction and investment.

Nidec Corporation Doubles Down on Hubballi

Japan’s Nidec Corporation, which already operates out of Hubballi, has fast-tracked its second phase of operations with a clear focus on becoming a primary supplier for India’s growing two-wheeler electric vehicle market. Industry watchers estimate this expansion alone could generate over 5,000 technical roles in the region.

Hubballi Airport Expansion: The Business Travel Gateway

The Hubballi Airport terminal expansion, aimed at handling 1,400 passengers simultaneously, was entering its final certification phase as of early 2026 with a target of full operational status by May 2026. Better air connectivity directly supports the surge in business travel and air cargo, and creates ripple employment in hospitality, transport, and logistics.

What This Means for Locals

The types of jobs expected range from skilled technical roles in electronics and EV manufacturing to service sector positions in logistics, hospitality, and retail. For graduates from Karnataka University Dharwad, KLE institutions, and IIT Dharwad, this is potentially the single biggest local opportunity that has emerged in a generation.

North Karnataka has long complained of being left behind in the state’s economic story. If these projects deliver even half of what is projected, the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad will finally have a credible answer to that complaint.
